Cannabis and Sleep – What You Need to Know

If you weren’t already aware, sleeping is super important. Sleeping is basically what allows our minds and bodies to “recharge” in a sense. Without getting enough sleep, we are not allowing our body to carry out its functions as efficiently. That is why people that do not get enough sleep tend to suffer from weight gain, lowered immune system, fatigue, energy loss, mental health disorders, and many others. People that do not get enough sleep at night can sometimes be diagnosed with insomnia, a chronic condition that can be treated with certain prescription medications. However, not all of these medications work effectively. Some people swear by using home remedies or natural vitamins like melatonin, and they have varying degrees of success. Recently, marijuana has begun to enter the conversation about sleep.

Anyone who has smoked a highly potent Indica strain has felt the effects of cannabis and sleep at full force, and it’s kind of amazing. Many people actually love to use cannabis as a nightly routine, since it allows for a warm, peaceful, and bliss transition from consciousness to sleep. However, what are the ramifications of using marijuana every night for sleep? Is it dangerous? Is it more effective than sleeping medications? Or less so? Well, I wanted to take some time today to clear up any misconceptions about cannabis and sleep. There is plenty to learn and discover about marijuana’s capabilities for effecting our minds and bodies, so make sure that you read the rest of this article to find out more.

Many reports have undoubtedly shown marijuana’s effectiveness for helping people fall asleep faster and stay asleep longer. However, is it that simple? Well, not really. You see, only certain strains of marijuana are truly helpful for getting to sleep at night. I have smoked plenty of strains that keep me up way longer than I would like to be. In addition to this, many people assume that THC is the only contributing factor to using weed to help you sleep. In reality, CBD plays a huge role in aiding our beauty rest. CBD is well known among the medical marijuana community due to its health benefits and anti-inflammatory properties. It has also been shown to be effective at relaxing our minds and bodies, even though it does not get someone high in the same way THC does. So when you are thinking about using marijuana to sleep better at night, make sure that you pick out a strain with some CBD in it as well. Another thing that I want to talk about is the potential risks involved with using marijuana for sleep.

Marijuana, like Ambien or trazodone, is a drug. While it is natural and generally risk-free (and also not synthetic like those other drugs I mentioned), it still can cause some side effects when used every night to help you sleep. One such drawback is that it can cause some weed hangovers the next day if used in higher doses or in certain products. In fact, I almost always wake up groggy and hungover if I take an edible the night before. Going through your entire morning with a foggy mind is no fun, and this is one of the problems that can be caused by using marijuana for sleep. In other ways, long-term use of THC for sleep can cause disruption in the REM cycle for people that are using it every night. This can lead to more sleep problems down the road, and no one wants to experience that. Overall, I think there are plenty of reasons to use marijuana for sleeping, but I think it should be done with care and moderation.
